Broken Social Scene is one of those collectives that made a lot of music that I have yet to get into, but made one or two songs that I love. “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl” is the latter. The song structure is unusual for pop music, consisting of several sections, each repeating a single melodic phrase. The third section builds up the intensity by layering in more instruments and vocals, and also dials back some of the effects processing, before a quieter instrumental release and coda.
This song was in my head when I woke up this morning, so here it is.
