Crystal and Tom’s Rehoboth wedding

it was clear that the evening was a family affair.

Autumn is my favorite season but I can’t help but feel nostalgic for the departure of summer. That’s why I fondly remember a quintessentially summer wedding that I was a part of last month. Crystal and Tom are a laid back, stylish couple who wanted a fun, intimate event for a close circle of loved ones. The wedding took place at a private home in Rehoboth, Delaware.  And while the guests were dapper, all the details of the evening reflected a relaxed beach vibe. Some guests arrived on beach cruiser bicycles. A few old doggies wandered about greeting people, maybe hoping to charm them out of a few cocktail hour nibbles.

The weather and sunset were perfect and I’m sad that I don’t have any photos of the beach ceremony, as I had to stay behind and finish some final preparations.

Crystal has great taste in music, her primary love being Prince, so cocktails and dinner selections reflected that. I’ve decided that “Strollin'” by Prince should be a cocktail hour standard after this wedding. The rest of the playlist included some of my choices like Jose Feliciano, Gringo Motel and Little Dragon blended with some great picks by the couple including Lisztomania (Classixx Version) by Phoenix, Jai Paul‘s “Jasmine (Demo)” and “Loro” by Pinback. Many of their picks have improved my indie pop and rock crates, which is a great benefit of wedding work. As DJs, we get to learn from our clients. I’ll also be working in more Toro Y Moi into weddings when I can thanks to how well some of their songs fit at this event. “Missing Me From Heaven” by Cocaine 80s also got a good response.

The couple chose Prince‘s “Call My Name” for their first dance, and while it’s a pretty smoldering tune, it turned into adorable comic relief once the children joined the bride and groom for their special moment. Crystal and Tom welcomed them, as it was clear that the evening was a family affair.

The sun went down and as the party tent glowed from the light of paper lanterns, I got the guests on the dancefloor. Michael Jackson and Prince made multiple appearances in my set as did the Beastie Boys and Madonna. De La Soul‘s “Me Myself and I” got the crowd hyped as did The J.B.‘s “Funky Good Time”. I rolled through a bunch more hip-hop and ’80s classics including tunes from The Cars, INXS, Young MC, Genesis, Cyndi Lauper. Modern jams included some Busta Rhymes, Missy ElliottUsher and of course “Wobble” by V.I.C.

I slowed it down at the end with some Frank Sinatra and then Louis Armstrong‘s “What A Wonderful World”, before packing up my gear to a soundtrack of crickets and crashing waves. Fortunately, an advance bit of Rehoboth wedding planning meant that I stuck around the next day to enjoy the beach.
