When people think of Dubstep they think teenage girls in teddies, frat boys sporting six packs and disjointed aggressive bass lines with catchy hooks. Without getting into what “real” Dubstep is, I will simple say the current popular image is only a small part of a very diverse genre of music.
Last week my crew Grime Syndicate had the privilege to open for one of my all time favorite producers: the self-described “fusion chef of bassweight” Von D. In a sea of over-the-top production (present company included) it’s important to get grounded from time to time. A frequent return to bass and rhythm reminds us of the key elements of this style of EDM that is often lost in search of more intricate bass leads and brutally in-your-face sounds. Nobody does this better than Von D. To even lighten it up a bit more his style has a very soulful sound that can only be described as “baby make’n music.” This is one of my favorite tracks from Von D featuring vocals from Phephe.
