Song of the Day: Quantic & Alice Russell “Look Around the Corner”

Quantic & Alice! The dynamic duo are back in action!

Two of my very favorite artists, prolific musician/bandleader/producer/DJ Quantic and (in my humble opinion) the reigning queen of UK soul Alice Russell (sorry, Adele) recently reunited in Quantic’s Cali, Colombia studio to write and record an album’s worth of songs. The resulting collection, Look Around the Corner, is out April 2nd. The lead single is the album’s title track, and is available now as a download and on limited edition 10″ vinyl.

Previous collaborations have seen the duo turning out soulful downtempo, and down’n’dirty funk, but this new project sees them expanding their sonic palette, incorporating soul, blues, folk and “the inimitable swing of Quantic’s world-renowned outfit the Combo Bárbaro.” The production sound of Chess Records—especially the brilliant work of producer/arranger/bandleader Richard Evans—informed the recording, as did the psychedelic soul of Rotary Connection (featuring the amazing multi-octave vocals of Minnie Riperton) and soul-jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby. The song more than lives up to those influences, exuding warmth, passion and undeniable hooks. Check it out below and watch the live-in-the-studio video.
Clearly Song of the Day.
