Last Friday we had the pleasure of providing entertainment for the wedding of Megan and Raymond at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Megan and Raymond chose the auspicious date of 11/11/11 for their wedding and they lucked out with a clear and sunny day! Their ceremony took place by the gazebo in the woods, surrounded by a dramatic display of fall color, with classical guitar accompaniment. It was a bit chilly but no one seemed to mind as they witnessed the joining of the happy couple.
Following the ceremony, guests made their way inside the Atrium for cocktails. The music was a mix of classic jazz and crooners, featuring Tony Bennett’s “The Shadow Of Your Smile,” “Lulu’s Back In Town” by Mel Tormé, and several selections from Frank Sinatra (“My Blue Heaven,” “Come Fly With Me,” and “Fly Me To The Moon”). As the sun set behind the trees, filling the room with orange and yellow light, we heard some hard-bop from Sonny Clark (“Cool Struttin'”) and Mark Murphy’s “Out Of This World,” before getting back into the Swing with Ella Fitzgerald’s “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”
Planner Aimee Hardenbergh of True Wedding Events did a great job coordinating everything for a smooth and enjoyable evening. This included liasing with the film crew shooting footage for DC Cupcakes. They were there to document the guests’ enjoyment of the confections provided by Georgetown Cupcake. The desserts brought the outdoors in with multicolored leaves made of frosting.
The members of the wedding party were introduced to the tune of “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, which went into “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers for Megan and Raymond’s entrance. Following a brief welcome speech, the bride and groom went into their first dance. They were both all smiles as they spun around the floor to “Lucky” by Jason Mraz. Renee Michelle was on hand to get all the great shots of Megan and Raymond’s important day.
Dinner was courtesy of Meadowlark’s in-house Great Blue Heron Catering. The food was delicious and the servers were very helpful and pleasant throughout the night.
The dance set ranged from classic Motown to 70s funk, from 80s hip-hop to current hits. By request we heard Wild Cherry’s “Play that Funky Music.” Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep (Cousin Cole Remix)” went right into Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison.” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Gladys Knight & The Pips was followed by “Cloud Nine” by The Temptations. At one point, the wedding planner turned to me and said that this was the music that she would want to hear at her dream wedding!
By request we heard “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, followed with “My Guy” by Mary Wells. Michael Jackson’s “PYT” went into “Sexy And I Know It” by LMFAO. Megan had a special request for Bloodhound Gang’s “The Bad Touch” (“to be played late”) and was delighted when the familiar ‘Discovery Channel’ lyrics started thumping through the speakers. Then “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield got people singing along. There were some requests for a line dance so we played Mr. C’s “Cha Cha Slide” and “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid.
Another set of 60s classics featured the requested “Then He Kissed Me” by The Crystals, “Build Me Up Buttercup” by The Foundations, and “Baby Love” by The Supremes. The dancers kept up when we switched to the 80s for “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins into Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”
The delightful evening wrapped up with the doo-wop classic “Goodnight Sweetheart” by The Spaniels.
