I am really feeling the late-night R&B-meets-indietronica stylings of The Weeknd right now. Owing a stylistic debt to Portishead and decidedly inspired by the sensual-but-plaintive boy-girl vocals of kindred spirits The XX, this mysterious Toronto-based studio project take on contemporary American R&B instead of 90s trip-hop or 80s UK synth-pop influences. Absolutely terrific listening. Though it sounds more like a full-length album than how the band describes it, their self-released debut ‘mixtape’ House of Balloons appeared just a couple of weeks ago.
